Jang Jae-hyun’s third feature film is a supernatural thriller that tackles issues of class, tradition, religion, and superstition and their role in South Korea’s history and cultural identity. It’s worth mentioning that, in order to guarantee the film’s authenticity, the director obtained a mortician’s licence and took part in more than a dozen exhumations. It premiered this year at the Berlinale and features a cast led by Choi Min-sik, the star of Park Chan-wook’s mythical “Oldboy”. In Los Angeles, the famous shaman Hwa-rim and her disciple and partner Bong-gil are hired to investigate a curse haunting a wealthy family of Korean descent. Sensing the sinister aura surrounding the youngest Park member, Hwa-rim asks for the grave of one of his ancestors to be relocated. The best geomancer in the business, Sang-deok, and mortician Young-geun join the team. But the mysterious grave holds dark secrets...
