Carol is an exhausted mother and worker who, in a not-so-distant future dominated by artificial intelligence, decides to take part in a virtual wellness retreat called DreamQuil to regain her balance and save her relationship with her family. During her absence, her husband Gary is offered an apparently perfect solution: “Carol 2”, a robotic replica of his wife, programmed to take care of the house and their children. Starring Elizabeth Banks (“The Hunger Games”) and John C. Reilly (“Chicago”), “DreamQuil” is a science-fiction psychological thriller that, somewhere between body horror and techno-horror, explores themes of identity, motherhood and family relationships, while questioning the price we pay when we delegate to artificial intelligence what makes us human. Directed by visual artist Alex Prager in her feature-film debut, it premiered at SXSW.
