Bacurau

Bacurau

A film by Kleber Mendonça Filho and Juliano Dornelles

Brazil, France, 2019, 132'

In the not too distant future, a small village named Bacurau in the middle of the Brazilian backlands is mourning Carmelita, the village matriarch who died at the age of 94. A few days later, the community dismayingly finds out that the village has disappeared from the world’s maps. Kleber Mendonça Filho, renowned Brazilian author who has travelled the world with his cinema, joins forces in directing with his Production Designer over the years, Juliano Dornelles, to bring us this dystopian allegory as a way of reflecting modern day Brazilian society. A film that fearlessly mixes genres such as horror, slasher, sci-fi, and western to give birth to something that truly surprises us. “Bacurau” premiered in 2019 at the Cannes Film Festival, where it was awarded the jury prize.
