In homage to Sergio Martino, this visual essay reflects on acid giallo as a category of Italian popular cinema from the early 1970s to the 1980s, in which the grammar of psychedelia invades the giallo and breaks its promise to restore legibility to a world rendered obscure, through chromatic saturations, optical effects, and editing that refuses any stable boundary between nightmare and wakefulness. Featuring contributions from researchers Luís Mendonça, Ricardo Vieira Lisboa and Rita Gomes Ferrão, original music by José Andrade, and narration by Teresa Huertas, the essay explores paradigmatic examples of acid giallo, from “Tutti i colori del buio” (Sergio Martino) to “Suspiria” (Dario Argento).
