European Premiere | With guests - João Cândido Zacharias, Rodrigo Letier and Tatiana Leite | Session 1
After learning of his mother’s death, Thomas returns to Brazil with Beni, his partner, and discovers that he now owns a country house that belonged to a grandmother he never met. Curious to connect with their family history, the two young men visit the house, where Thomas is welcomed by two aunts who treat him like a long-lost child. As Thomas becomes more and more enamoured with the place, Beni begins to suspect that something is hidden beneath the surface of a quiet life in the countryside. João Cândido Zacharias‘ feature film debut shows us new possibilities in the new wave of Brazilian horror that we’ve been screening in recent years ("Bacurau", “Property”). "The Birthright" is a very personal queer horror that fuses giallo with Brazilian telenovela and has as its subject hidden family monsters.
