A Beast in Love

恋するけだもの

A film by Koji Shiraishi

Japan, 2020, 90'

Chuya, a young man with a troubled past, is bullied and abused by his violent boss and co-workers. He plans on running away to another city with his colleague, Shiori. They meet in the afternoon at an empty cocktail bar, but things will not go as expected. Now, Chuya fears he might be killed at the hands of his boss or smothered with affection by a strange, menacing crossdresser. “A Beast in Love” is a dark, violent, and twisted gem by Koji Shiraishi, a veteran and prolific director of Japanese horror cinema, having helmed alternative or low-budget films such as “Noroi: The Curse” (2005) or “Grotesque” (2009), banned in the UK due to its extreme violence. “Sadako vs. Kayako” (MOTELX 2016) is his most well-known film.
