John Christie, a seemingly role model citizen living in mid-20th century London, is actually a serial killer. Disguised as a doctor, he convinces naive women that he can cure them of anything if they follow him home. Based on true events taken from the archives of Scotland Yard, the story follows John as he shelters a pregnant bride and her young husband. Today regarded as a model for television’s true crime, it is at the same time an unknown classic of serial killer films. The SNI disapproved of this film “due to the morbidity of the theme and the extremely depressing way it is treated”. Above all, “10 Rillington Place” is a classic with masterful performances by Richard Attenborough (in the role of Christie) and John Hurt (in his film debut).
