Winner of the MOTELx Award - Best Portuguese Horror Short Film 2010, chosen by the jury composed by Alan Jones, José de Matos-Cruz, and José Nascimento.

Written and directed by João Alves, «Bats in the Belfry» tells the story of Deadeye Jack, who, after a failed robbery attempt during the day, returns to try again under the cover of night, only to find that the owners of the money he's after have fallen pray to vampires disguised as missionaries.

João Alves (b. 1982) has a fascination for horror since an early age. Amongst is childhood memories is seeing «Alien» from behind a couch, or having nightmares for weeks after watching «The Evil Dead». He graduated in Marine Biology and Fishing by the University of Algarve, but would end up working in 3D and vector animation. After several works for television and the Internet, the MOTELx inspired him to make the short «Bats in the Belfry», based on a 2006 storyboard. It would eventually win the second edition of the MOTELx Award - Best Portuguese Horror Short Film.
