MOTELX - Lisbon International Horror Film Festival announced today the main highlights of its 11th edition, which will take place between 5 and 10 September at Cinema São Jorge, Teatro Tivoli BBVA and Cinemateca Júnior (Palácio Foz).

Two masters of horror have confirmed their presence this year: Alejandro Jodorowsky and Roger Corman. Chilean psycho-magician who pioneered midnight screenings with “El Topo”, Jodorowsky has built a unique legacy in the field of surrealist cinema, attracting the attention of figures such as Salvador Dalí, John Lennon, Pink Floyd and Orson Welles. Corman is one of the biggest independent filmmakers and producers in the history of American history. A Hollywood rebel recognised by the Academy with an Honorary Oscar, he launched the careers of Scorsese, Jack Nicholson and Robert de Niro, among others.

The MOTELX Award - Best Portuguese Horror Short Film / Méliès d’Argent returns, encouraging the national production of genre cinema with the biggest monetary prize awarded to short films in Portugal: €5,000, complemented this year by another €5,000 in post-production services by Kino Sound Studio and an inspirational weekend at Belver Hotels. The competition for the MOTELX Award – Best European Feature Film/ Méliès d’Argent also continues, after a successful first edition that proved to be a hit with festival audiences. Also worth noting is the Yorn microSHORTS competition, which awards short films recorded with smartphone or tablet with up to two minutes. All are invited to submit their microSHORTS until 26 August.

Programming highlights include films such as “The Limehouse Golem” by Juan Carlos Medina, a feminist revival of Jack the Ripper, or “Kuso”, the scatological experiment by musician Flying Lotus that caused a sensation at Sundance’s midnight screenings. Dark humour is also present in films such as “The Bar”, of the Spanish master of horror Álex de la Iglesia, and the politically incorrect “68 Kill” by Trent Haaga, starring Matthew Gray Gubler from the hit TV show “Criminal Minds”.

Lisbon was named the Capital of Ibero-american Culture this year, and MOTELX is joining the celebrations with “The Strange World of Latin Terror”, a retrospective that aims to explore the diversity of genre cinema produced in South America and the Iberian Peninsula. The Lost Room section unearths two Iberian co-productions that have been largely forgotten, “Triangle” (1971) and “El Espiritista” (1976), and there is a special session dedicated to the luso-brazilian Jean Garrett, “golden boy” of São Paulo’s exploitation cinema in the 70s.

With younger audiences in mind, MOTELX presents the animated feature film “The Book of Life”, which can be seen on the big screen for the first time in Portugal. The Big Bad Wolf section also includes a paper chase game in Cinema São Jorge, a computer programming workshop for children and short film screenings for the whole family at Cinemateca Júnior and Museu Coleção Berardo.

The programme of MOTELX’s 11th edition would not be complete without MOTELX LAB and the parallel events that run across the six days of the Festival. There is a lot to choose from, from the unpredictable MOTELquiz to the nostalgia of VHS Nights, not to mention makeup workshops, exhibitions, the presentation of the book “Edgar Allan Poe’s Best Short Stories” and a night-long writing marathon. Before that, between 31 August and 2 September there are three days of Warm-Up events, with parties, concerts and open-air screenings in some of Lisbon’s best-known locations (Largo de São Carlos and Cais do Sodré).

To help audiences to keep up with all the action, MOTELX partnered with Virtual Fest and Muxima Design to create an App with exclusive content, soon to be available free of charge for iOS and Android. It is said that whoever downloads it will know more and scream louder than anyone else.
